Monday Memo
For the second week in a row "Thor" topped the weekend box office, earning over $34 million dollars. "Bridesmaids", "Fast Five", "Priest" and "Rio" round out the top five films of the week. Congratulations to Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa are in order. His latest single "Roll Up", has just gone gold. According to Atlantic Records, the single has passed the 500,000-sales mark. Wiz's major label debut, "Rolling Papers", entered Billboard's Top 200 Chart at No. 2, and has sold 370,000 copies to date. Big Boi of the Atlanta rap group Outkast has launched a record label called Purple Kids, which will promote young artists. The catch is that the label was a gift to his 16-year old daughter Jordan Patton. In an interview with Billboard magazine, the rapper stated that he wanted to give his daughter something she could grow, build and nurture. The label will launch in a few weeks with Gabbie Rae, a You Tube sensation who has already appeared on "The Tyra Banks Show". First Soulja Boy prepares to release a movie and mixtape "Juice" after the classic 1992 film of same name. Now, the Atlanta rapper has announced that he's considering the lead role in a biopic about the life of the late Tuapc Shakur. He says the William Morris Agency contacted him regarding possibly playing the role. In the meantime, the rapper is currently in the studio, where he is reportedly working with Drake. As mentioned previously, ABC's "Good Morning America" has announced that they've tapped Beyonce and Nicki Minaj to appear as part of it's Summer Concert series that takes place in New York City at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. Others to appear on the series will be Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige and Lady Gaga. The series starts on May 27. Not to be outdone, NBC's "Today Show" has announced that it has tapped Chris Brown, Cee-Lo and Rihanna to appear on their show. Rapper 50 Cent has announced that he's almost done with his next release. Although the upcoming album is still untitled, the G-Unit general is looking to surpass the sales of his debut album "Get Rich Or Die Trying". He has yet to surpass the sales of that release with any of his other releases. It's down to four couples on "Dancing With The Stars," and the show is heading for a season of record ratings. One reason for the skyrocketing ratings is that each couple is evenly matched. Tune in tonight as the contestants dance for votes, and be sure to catch tomorrow's results show. Fox, meanwhile, has two projects in the works for fall. One is the Simon Cowell produced show "X Factor", which will inherit "American Idol's" time slots. The other is Terra Nova, an ambitious time-travel dinosaur adventure from Steven Spielberg. The network, which is number one with young-adult viewers, will unveil it's new schedule to advertisers, and has committed to six more series. A "Bones" spin off, the JJ Abrams drama "Alcatraz", and four new comedies, including the animated "Allen Gregory", starring Jonah Hill as a precocious 7-year old and "Napoleon Dynamite", featuring the 2004 original film's cast. Only time will tell which shows will be successful. On the tube: "House" on Fox, "How I Met Your Mother" on CBS, "Dancing With The Stars" on ABC and "Chuck" on NBC. Happy Monday!
