Monday Memo
The film "Monsters University" topped the weekend box office earning over $46 million. "The Heat", "World War Z", "White House Down" and "Man Of Steel" all round out the top five films of the week. The BET Awards aired last night. and included a few hits and misses. Actor/comedian Chris Tucker hosted, but stalled for time during various parts of the show. One of the show's highlights was a tribute to Charlie Wilson. Stevie Wonder and others performed in his honor. Among the winners were Nicki Minaj, Drake, who was a no-show and Kanye West. An encounter between former "Celebrity Apprentice" stars Omarosa and Claudia Jordan turned ugly. Reportedly there was a physical confrontation which ended with the two taking to Twitter to bash one another. Stay tuned. All in all, here's hoping next year's show is better. It looks like rapper/producer Jermaine Dupri is the latest artist to encounter IRS trouble. The government agency has placed two liens on the star for unpaid taxes for 2008,2010 and 2011. Dupri hasn't commented on the matter. For fans of R &B sensation Janelle Monae, Christmas has come early. The singer announced that not only will she be releasing her sophomore album "The Electric Lady" on September 10, but she's also entered a partnership with retailer Target to allow fans to pick up an exclusive edition of the disc, which will contain four bonus tracks. She also talked about collaborations. She says she collaborated with Miguel, Erykah Badu and Prince. Fans can also catch the singer on BET's "106 & Park" where she'll be performing one of the Target exclusive tracks. After a surprise appearance at A$AP Rocky's Summer Jam set, Cleveland rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony announced that they'll be joining two other hip hop shows, West Coast Fest and Rock the Bells; and releasing two new albums, one which will be a joint venture with Snoop Lion, and another, their own, led by a single to be released in July. The group is also in talks with legendary California rap duo Tha Dog Pound about a joint album called Thug Pound. Although the group has split up and gotten back together several times, Bizzy Bones says nothing beats the five of them together. Looks like they have a great deal in store for fans. Sad news out of Hollywood. Actor and martial arts expert Jim Kelly has died. According to CNN, Kelly's ex-wife confirmed that the actor died of cancer. With his lanky frame, huge afro and wise cracks, Kelly is best remember for his roles in the films "Enter The Dragon" and "Three The Hard Way". He was 67. In later years, he ran a martial arts school after film roles dried up. He will be missed. On the tube: "Raising Hope" on Fox, "How I Met Your Mother" on CBS, "The Bachelorette" on ABC and "American Ninja Warrior" on NBC. Happy Monday!
