Monday Memo
The film "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" topped the weekend box office, earning over $50 million dollars. "The Smurfs", "Cowboys & Aliens", "The Change Up" and "Captain America: The First Avenger" round out the top five films of the week. Rapper Big Boi, of the Atlanta rap group Outkast, was arrested over the weekend after leaving a cruise ship. It appears other passengers complained of smelling marijuana coming from the rooms of the rapper"s entourage, and authorities searched the area. They found escasty and marijuana in the rapper's possession. He was charged with two felony counts of drug possession. He posted bond and was released. He took to Twitter to tweet about the incident letting fans know he had been released. Congratulations to singer Kelly Rowland are in order. The former Destiny's Child members third solo album, "Here I Am", debuted at No. 3 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart after selling 76,857 copies in its first week in stores. The singer has been riding the success of the album's hit single "Motivation" for months, and this is the icing on the cake. Following in Justin Timberlake's footsteps, rapper Kanye West is the latest musician to invest in a social media company. The Grammy award winner has donated funds to Turntable.fm, a New York based start up that lets users play music for an online audience. West joins Lady Gaga and influential venture capital firm Union Square Ventures in giving Turntable a cash infusion. The rapper gave 7.5 million to the company, which is valued at 37.5 million, according to Business Insider. Turntablefm. follows the same law that allows Pandora Internet Radio to stream millions of songs without licenses, but it's not clear if the service qualifies for those protections. The support of artists could help in the battle to win record label approval. West is also reportedly involved in another startup called Voyr, which allows fans to sign up for a live stream of the behind-the-scenes activities of their favorite celebrities for a monthly fee. After a three year absence, rapper Young Jeezy is back. In anticipation of the release of his fourth studio album, "Thug Motivation 103", the rapper will grace the cover of rap magazine The Sources August/September issue. In the article, he discusses rap beef, and the long delay of his new album. "Thug Motivation 103" hits store shelves on September 20. The August/September issue of The Source hit newsstands on August 23. The Teen Choice Awards were held and "Twilight Saga: Eclipse" received several awards for acting. Justin Bieber, who attended the ceremony with girlfriend Selena Gomez, won Male Hottie. All in all, the show left many older entertainers feeling old and grumpy. On the tube: "Hell's Kitchen" on Fox, "How I Met Your Mother" on CBS, "Bachelor Pad" on ABC and "America's Got Talent" on NBC. Happy Monday!
