Tuesday Tales

The Michael Jackson wrongful death trial is underway in Los Angeles and footage of the "This Is It" concert rehearsal film was shown to the judge and jury during opening statements. Meanwhile, fans have flocked to the courtroom to get a glimpse of the proceedings. Public Enemy front man Chuck D is making it clear that he's not feeling the Jay Z/Kanye West hit "N In Paris". After a concert in the city, he had to correct a fan when the fan called him he N word by saying that the word is offensive to people of African descent. He even took to Twitter to make his feelings on the matter known. First daughter Malia Obama got an opportunity to attend a Rihanna concert. Pictures of the event have been posted on the Internet. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West aren't asking well wishers for gifts for their baby. They're asking that everyone make a donation to Children's Hospital. Nice gesture. Queen Bee Lil Kim is set to make a major comeback. The Brooklyn rapper announced that she's tapped producer Bangladesh to helm her first studio album in a decade. She added that other producers are working on the album as well. There's a new single on the way, which will be produced by Bangladesh, and she has plenty of gifts in store for fans as well. She's also breaking new artists Tiffany Fox and Young Goldie, whom she collaborated with on the track "1 Hunna". Lil Kim's new album  is set to hit stores later this year. It looks like the effort to get singer Mariah Carey booted off Fox's "American Idol" wasn't as sinister as first thought. Reported singer Jennifer Lopez has talked with Fox about returning to the show since her twins will be starting school soon and they'll need stability. No word on a deal as yet. With several releases on the horizon for the coming months, it looks like summer 2013 will be the summer of J Cole. The rapper's highly anticipated album "Born Sinner"   is set for release and he has quite a surprise in store for fans. Sampling Lauryn Hill's "Nothing Even Matters" for the single "Cole Summer", he turns the track from a love song to a lyrical diary about career feats and fears. He even added a verse in case Ms Hill doesn't approve of the sample. "Born Sinner" hits stores on June 25. Fans will be happy to know that rapper Pusha T and Juicy J both have new music due out in July. On DVD: "Silver Linings Playbook", "The Guilt Trip", "Not Fade Away" and "Broken City". Monday Memo

The action film "Pain & Gain" topped the weekend box office earning over $20 million. ""Oblivion", "42", "The Big Wedding" and "The Croods" round out the top five films of the week. The father of singer Chris Brown is speaking out about the relationship between Brown and Rihanna. He says the two have no balance in their relationship and it could end tragically. Here's hoping it doesn't. In the meantime, celebrity web site Mediatakeout.com is reporting that the two are officially over. Neither Brown nor Rihanna has commented. Katherine Jackson, the mother of the late Michael Jackson, heads to court today in her wrongful death lawsuit against concert promoter AEG. Mrs Jackson will try to prove that her son's health wasn't a priority for the firm when it hired Dr Conrad Murray. Meanwhile, the defense may try to prove that Jackson's addiction caused his death. A remake of the Amy Winehouse hit "Back To Black" was recorded by singer Beyonce and rapper Andre 3000 of Outkast for the soundtrack to the film "The Great Gatsby", but the late Winehouse's father Mitch is not impressed. He says the song is terrible and Beyonce should have done it alone. He added during an interview that no one paid for the privilege of rerecording the song. Meanwhile, Mark Ronson, who produced the remake as well as Winehouse's album "Back To Black" says it's a wonderful take on the original and he's honored and Winehouse would be too. The soundtrack is executive produced by Jay Z and includes music by Jay, will.i.am, and Q-Tip with Fergie and GoonRock. Legendary R&B group the O'Jays are not happy with Crown Royal. The group has just filed a $1 million lawsuit against the liquor company for unauthorized use of their 1973 hit "For The Love Of Money". Founding members Walter Williams Sr and Eddie Levert Sr filed the suit claiming that the new commercial featuring NBA legend Julius "Dr J" Erving is "humiliating" and "demeaning". Rapper Big K.R.I.T.'s "Reign On" is the song used in the commerical that shows Dr J raising a glass to old footage of himself. The 9th Wonder track samples "For The Love Of Money". Williams and Levert have accused Crown Royal of reducing them to "background singers" for not using the original version, which has been featured in several TV spots, including mogul Donald Trump's "The Apprentice" and "Celebrity Apprentice". 9th Wonder explained during an interview that the song was inspired by Dr J,of course. He added that the sample was chosen because "it definitely fits the time", giving the track a 70's groove. Despite Crown Royal's past attempts to woo urban radio listeners, ( the brand has teamed up with Big Boi and Jermaine Durpi), Williams and Levert are not impressed. They are seeking a seven figure pay out and have turned their ire on Big K.R.I.T. too, calling his rhyme "childish" and calling him a "poseur with limited ability to carry a tune". On the tube: "Bones" on Fox, "How I Met Your Mother" on CBS, "Dancing With The Stars Live" on ABC and "The Voice" on NBC. Happy Monday!!

No word on whether or not Flava will be able to make the ceremony. In more Jay Z news, sports agents are crying foul over his recent signing of New York Giants wide-receiver Victor Cruz. Some agents are mad because the hip hop mogul is not a certified "Contract Advisor" and third-party recruiting was blocked from the NFLPA in a new rule set in place last year.  Those really angry are mentioning Master P's foray into sports management, siting his contract negotiation for then rookie Ricky Williams as one of the worst deals in the history of the NFL. The NFLPA will not likely view the move as a violation as Jay's long-time friendship with Cruz extends beyond any contract with Rock Nation Sports and its partner CAA Sports, the leading sports management agency in the game with over 800 signees. Jay, who will grace the cover of Time magazine as one of its world's most influential people, is very serious about his business. He's reportedly planning to become a sports agent himself. The next test he's eligible to take is  in January 2014, plenty of time to negotiate waiving another rule that requires those who are certified to have a postgraduate degree. In the meantime, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has expressed interest in purchasing Jay's shares in the Net, which would make it possible for the Brooklyn native to cut deals for baseball players as well. It looks like the beef between singers Ciara and Rihanna is real. Ciara reportedly tweeted a message aimed at the singer which also referenced Rihanna's hit single with Ciara's boyfriend Future.  So far, no response from Rihanna. All this after Ciara stated there really wasn't a problem between the two. Looks like inviting them both to the same party wouldn't be a good idea. Singer Kelly Rowland has been tapped to replace Brittany Spears on the American version of  "X Factor". She was originally a judge on the UK version of the show before being replaced by Nicole Scherzinger. No word on when she'll make her first appearance on the show. Although rapper Rick Ross has apologized for his offensive lyrics on the single "U.O.E.N.O.", he feels that tennis shoe giant Reebok should take him back. With the steepest prices running $225, the singer/rapper slammed his music industry peers for asking fans to dig so deep into their pockets. On the show to promote his own tour run, which begins in late June, Rock went on to explain that he charges only $20 per ticket. He added that he's always tried to keep ticket prices where he thinks their fair. He also took a pay cut and worked out deals with sponsors in order to drop the ticket fee. He's even gone the extra mile by offering fans free sandwiches in certain markets. It's always nice to see an artist give back. On the tube: "American Idol" on Fox, "Survivor: Caramoan: Fans Vs Favorites" on CBS, "Modern Family" on ABC and "Dateline NBC" on NBC. Happy hump day!!

Wednesday Roundup

Rapper Rick Ross is still feeling the fallout over lyrics that seem to suggest that he condones date rape. Meanwhile, Tyga and Meek Mill are coming to his defense. Tyga says it doesn't matter what Ross says because he's protected by the First Amendment. Meek Mill says he likens Ross' lyrics to a film maker who writes about rape. Just because the film includes a rape scene doesn't mean the writer condones it. Rapper Jay Z may be giving up his share in the Brooklyn Nets. His Rock Nation will be getting into sports management and it would present a conflict of interest. It's against NBA rules for any owner to own shares in a team while managing a player. Singer Ciara says she's happy. She's currently dating rapper Future and says he's her best friend as well as her boyfriend. She even went so far as to say that the two may start a family soon. Best wishes to the pair. In other Ciara news, it looks like inviting she and singer Rihanna to the same party wouldn't be wise. When asked if she'd speak if she saw Rihanna in the same room, Ciara said she didn't know. In the meantime, Rihanna responded by saying "You don't know. Too easy". Don't know what's going on, but it doesn't appear to be good. The rapper who once rapped "187 on an undercover cop" is singing a new tune these days. Tuesday Tales

It looks like Beyoncé and Jay Z did obtain proper paperwork before their recent trip to Cuba after all. The couple has come under a firestorm of criticism for taking the trip to the island nation due to a U.S. trade embargo. So far, the couple has not responded to the negative comments. In other Beyoncé news, at least, Destiny's Child band mate Kelly Rowland has revealed that their will be a Destiny's Child reunion, sort of. Rowland revealed that both Beyoncé and Michelle Williams will appear on her new single "Talk A Good Game". Rowland also added that she's recorded 70 songs for her fourth studio release and had to narrow it down to 12. The album will also include collaborations with Pharrell Williams and Wiz Khalifa. The album hits stores on June 4. Rapper Jay Z continues to make major moves in the industry. His Rock Nation has joined with Universal Music  Group. Under the new deal, the label will remain independent and will take Rihanna and other artists with it. Hova said in a statement that the deal presents a unique opportunity for the label to operate as an independent with the strength, power and reach of the best major. Congratulations. It's rare that country music and  hip hop collide. Sure, rapper Nelly scored a hit with Tim McGraw some time back, but no one else has had success merging the two genres. Even with all of that, his legacy has been overlooked. Now his daughter is hoping to change that. Recording star E.B Wright plans to release a documentary which will focus on the death of her father. She says there's a story there and there's a lot of misconception out there as well and the film will clear it up. E.B was only four when her father died and says she's been told stories about  her father. While other documentaries have been done about Eazy, this one will be more in-depth and have interviews with former members of N.W.A, family, friends, doctors, lawyers and court papers will all be there. Like many West Coast die-hards, E.B. feels her father doesn't get the respect he deserves for not only paving the way for other rappers, but also for today's urban impresarios to capitalize on what is now a global phenomenon. Although she can't mention any names until  everything is confirmed, E.B. promises big names and big surprises with "A Ruthless Scandal". The film is slated for release some time in 2014. In addition, E.B. is becoming quite the mogul herself. In addition to overseeing the documentary, she's preparing her debut album and will have her own reality show.
