Monday Memo

The action film "Pain & Gain" topped the weekend box office earning over $20 million. ""Oblivion", "42", "The Big Wedding" and "The Croods" round out the top five films of the week. The father of singer Chris Brown is speaking out about the relationship between Brown and Rihanna. He says the two have no balance in their relationship and it could end tragically. Here's hoping it doesn't. In the meantime, celebrity web site Mediatakeout.com is reporting that the two are officially over. Neither Brown nor Rihanna has commented. Katherine Jackson, the mother of the late Michael Jackson, heads to court today in her wrongful death lawsuit against concert promoter AEG. Mrs Jackson will try to prove that her son's health wasn't a priority for the firm when it hired Dr Conrad Murray. Meanwhile, the defense may try to prove that Jackson's addiction caused his death. A remake of the Amy Winehouse hit "Back To Black" was recorded by singer Beyonce and rapper Andre 3000 of Outkast for the soundtrack to the film "The Great Gatsby", but the late Winehouse's father Mitch is not impressed. He says the song is terrible and Beyonce should have done it alone. He added during an interview that no one paid for the privilege of rerecording the song. Meanwhile, Mark Ronson, who produced the remake as well as Winehouse's album "Back To Black" says it's a wonderful take on the original and he's honored and Winehouse would be too. The soundtrack is executive produced by Jay Z and includes music by Jay, will.i.am, and Q-Tip with Fergie and GoonRock. Legendary R&B group the O'Jays are not happy with Crown Royal. The group has just filed a $1 million lawsuit against the liquor company for unauthorized use of their 1973 hit "For The Love Of Money". Founding members Walter Williams Sr and Eddie Levert Sr filed the suit claiming that the new commercial featuring NBA legend Julius "Dr J" Erving is "humiliating" and "demeaning". Rapper Big K.R.I.T.'s "Reign On" is the song used in the commerical that shows Dr J raising a glass to old footage of himself. The 9th Wonder track samples "For The Love Of Money". Williams and Levert have accused Crown Royal of reducing them to "background singers" for not using the original version, which has been featured in several TV spots, including mogul Donald Trump's "The Apprentice" and "Celebrity Apprentice". 9th Wonder explained during an interview that the song was inspired by Dr J,of course. He added that the sample was chosen because "it definitely fits the time", giving the track a 70's groove. Despite Crown Royal's past attempts to woo urban radio listeners, ( the brand has teamed up with Big Boi and Jermaine Durpi), Williams and Levert are not impressed. They are seeking a seven figure pay out and have turned their ire on Big K.R.I.T. too, calling his rhyme "childish" and calling him a "poseur with limited ability to carry a tune". On the tube: "Bones" on Fox, "How I Met Your Mother" on CBS, "Dancing With The Stars Live" on ABC and "The Voice" on NBC. Happy Monday!!
