Thursday Dish
There's controversy brewing over comments a judge made on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars". Judge Bruno made the comment that singer Michael Bolton's jive was the worst in the show's history. Mr Bolton didn't take kindly to the words. No comment from the judge or ABC on the matter. In more televison news, CBS won the battle of the network ratings coming in first place. Leading the way were such shows as the new "Hawaii Five-0" and "The Defenders", among others. Let's see if the network can keep the momentum going. It certainly has kept fans tuned in since the start of the new televison season. Rapper Kid Cudi may may face jail time in connection with a possession of cocaine charge. He will appear in court next month. Let's hope the hip hop star can get back on track soon. Rapper Jay Z will appear on the cover of Forbes magazine with billionaire Warren Buffett. It appears that rapper met the mogul some time ago, although there's been no word on what they discussed. Be sure to pick up a copy. Rapper Drake reportedly got into a scuffle with a fan and had a bodyguard beat the fan down. The fan apparently had a few choice words for the MC, to which he responded by having the bodyguard beat the fan to a pulp before giving him the finger. Singer Fantasia Barrino is set to hit the road on her first tour as a headliner. Although no dates and locations have been announced, the tour should do very well. After creating quite a buzz in the industry, rapper J.Cole is set to hit the road on a thirty city tour. No dates and locations have been announced as yet. That should also be a show that fans won't soon forget. The Roots and John Legend rocked the house when they took the stage for the third installment of American Express's Unstaged concert series. The show was streamlined live and directed by writer/director/producer Spike Lee. Although Legend and The Roots didn't disappoint, the showstopper of the evening was Jennifer Hudson as she performed a pitch perfect version of Walter Hawkins's "Be Grateful". The show took place at Terminal 5. in New York City. Singer Michael Bolton was given the boot on last night's "Dancing With The Stars". Be sure to tune in as the season moves on to see who takes home the disco ball trophy. The Britany Spears episode of Fox's "Glee" scored the show's second highest ratings since it's air date. Rapper Kanye West has signed rapper Mos Def to his G.O.O.D Music label. Although there's been no word on an album or release date, West should be able to do for Mos Def what he's done for other artists on his label. Wyclef Jean has been released from the hospital after checking himself in for stress and fatique. He complained of headaches then check himself in to a hospital. The Drake/Nicki Minaj romance rumors just won't die. Nicki Minaj recently stated during an interview with Complex magazine that Drake told her he wrote the Alicia Keys hit "Unthinkable" for her. Days after the story hit the internet, Minaj then stated to DJ Funkmaster Flex that Drake has probably told many girls he wrote the song for them. She also stated that he is slick with his words and probably made the statement when he thought he'd get lucky. Stay tuned. Be sure to tune in to the results show of ABC's "Dancing With The Stars". So far, it appears that the top contenders are Jennifer Grey, Kurt Warner and Rick Fox, but time will tell. The fall televison season is well underway and although the returning favorites are doing well in the ratings, some new shows haven't faired as well. The film "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" was the big winner at the weekend box office, earning over $19 million dollars. "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga' Hoole", "The Town", "Easy A" and "You Again" round out the top five films of the week. Singer Aretha Franklin recently released a statement regarding the beating of her adult son Eddie. Ms Franklin wanted to clarify some media reports. She stated that he was released from the hospital after surgery and that his jaw had been wired shut. She also stated that his girlfriend had given the wrong location of the incident at the time. Stay tuned for more as it develops. MC Hammer took to social networking site Twitter to respond to what he assumed was a diss by rapper Jay Z. Jay Z has reportedly recorded a track where he disses Hammer and refers to him by name. Hammer responded with a video post saying if Hova wanted his attention, he got it. We'll see how this plays out. As the new televison season continues, be sure to check out tonight's "Dancing With The Stars" as the contestants continue their showdown for the disco ball trophy. Singer/songwriter Lyfe Jennings will serve a three year prison sentence for an incident where the singer kicked in the door of the mother of his children, fired a weapon into the street and lead police on a high speed chase. Here's praying that the star will get his life back on track after the sentence has been served. Just when rumors surfaced that she would be taking a break during 2010, it appears that singer Beyonce will release a new album sooner that anticipated and the first single should be released in three weeks. According to the New York Post, Beyonce will work with The Dream and Tricky Stewart, the same producers who crafted the smash "Single Ladies" from the multi-platinum "I am: Sasha Fierce". Los Da Mystro broke the news via Twitter. No release date for the project has been announced, however. If you suspected that you heard UGK member Bun B on rapper Drake's "Miss Me", you'd be correct. The Texas born and bread rapper recorded a verse over the track, but didn't request it remain before relinquishing it to Drake at his request. He says Drake is a talented artist and has yet to do his best work. Be sure to catch the premiere of CBS's "Blue Bloods". Tom Selleck heads an all star cast and the show is centered around a family with deep roots in law enforcement. The female MC has indicated that a bogus website has been selling tickets to unbooked shows across the country. No word on whether legal action regarding the matter will be taken. PBS's long running children's show "Sesame Street" has apparently decided that singer Katy Perry's cleavage may be fine for boyfriend Russell Brand, but not for young viewers of the show. The show has pulled a taped segment of the show featuring the singer with Elmo. The "I Kissed A Girl" singer, known for her revealing clothing, wore a gold bustier top as she sang a version of her hit "Hot And Cold". Some felt it was too revealing for the kid set. No comment from Perry's reps. Rapper 50 Cent is being sued by the production company that worked on his upcoming film "When Things Fall Apart". The company claims 50 didn't complete the project as promised in the contract. No word on the amount in damages being sought and no comment from 50 or his representatives. Eddie Franklin, son of singer Aretha Franklin, has been released from the hospital after being brutally attacked at a Detroit gas station. Despite an apparent jab at the NBC staple, rapper Kanye West is slated to perform on "Saturday Night Live" on October 2nd. Actor Bryan Cranston of AMC's "Breaking Bad" will host the episode. The show should be an exciting one not to be forgotten. Singer Rihanna is gearing up for her feature film debut. She's even been seen sporting a fake tatoo gotten recently just for the role. No word on the title of the film or when it will be released. Premiere week kicked off last night with the airing of ABC's "Dancing With The Stars". Among the performance highlights were, the performances of Brandy and Max and Derek and Jennifer. The show ended with a three way tie for last place. The Ben Affleck film "The Town" topped the weekend box office, earning over $23 million dollars. "Easy A", "Devil", "Resident Evil: Afterlife" and "Alpha and Omega" round out the top five films of the week. Apparently what happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas after all. Singer Bruno Mars was arrested over the weekend for cocaine possession. According to website TMZ, the singer was caught with 2.6 grams of coke after Hard Rock Hotel and Casino security approached him in a bathroom and found the drugs on him. Mars had performed at the venue the previous evening. There's been no word on what type of drugs the singer had in his possession. After assisting B.o.B and Travis McCoy on hits like "Nothin' On You" and "Billionaire", the singer now has the number 3 single on Billboard's Hot 100 with "Just The Way You Are". Rapper Jay Z is set to share the stage with rockers Coldplay in Las Vegas as headliners at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas casino-resort on New Years Eve. Officals stated that the stars would also play solo sets with the performances broadcast on the hotel's 65-foot (20-meter) marquee overlooking the Las Vegas Strip.The concert is part of a three-day invitation only celebration roughly two weeks after the resort opens. The resort is scheduled to open on December 15. Officals also stated that the New Years weekend will also include a surprise performance on the resort's pool deck, which overlooks Las Vegas Boulevard. In other Jay Z news, Hova and wife Beyonce were recently added to the Guinness Book of World Records as the "highest earning power couple". Although the sum of the couple's earnings stands at $150 million, the 2010 addition of Guinness has the couple earning $122 million between June 2009 and June 2010. Rapper T.I. has been summoned to appear in an Atlanta court to explain why his probation shouldn't be revoked after a recent arrest in Los Angeles. U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell Jr signed the summons for the rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris, on Thursday. The same judge sentenced T.I. for firearms violations. The order list three possible violations of his bond: possession of ecstasy, testing positive for opiates and associating with a convicted felon. Pannell did not set a date for the hearing. Los Angeles County sheriffs officals say the rapper was stopped on September 1 on a Hollywood street after making an illegal U-turn. Police say they found several pills confirmed to be a controled substance. In lighter news, beginning Monday, September 20, BET will launch "Music Matters Week". This special week will serve as the launch pad for "106 & Park's" new initiative "Music Matters Tuesdays", which will provide a platform for the next BET Superstars. Each Tuesday, an artist will be invited to world premiere their new video and perform live on the "106 & Park" stage. This sounds like a wonderful initiative that will give many talented and deserving artists the opportunites they deserve. Way to go BET! Actress/singer Jennifer Lopez will indeed be a judge on Fox's "American Idol". Under the terms of the deal, she will receive $12 million for the gig. The new season of the show will start in January 2011. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey kicked of the 25th and final season of her talk show by giving audience members an all expenses paid trip to Australia, with actor John Travolta as the plane pilot. The trip is sure to be one that fans will not soon forget. Writer/director Spike Lee is set to direct a webcast of a concert featuring John Legend and the Roots. The concert, to be held in New York on September 23, is the second part of "Unstaged", a live concert presented by American Express. The live stream will be webcast on YouTube, via the the music video website Vevo. Various interactive elements will be offered, including an option for viewers to choose their camera view. The show should be an exciting one. For those who aren't aware, "Big Brother 12" is getting down to the wire and it's anyone's guest who will walk away with the grand prize. After reuniting after five years apart, the New York rap collective Dip Set is rumored to be ready to sign a deal with Interscope Records. Sad news out of the world of contemporarygospel music. Malinda Sapp, wife of gospel singer Marvin Sapp has died of colon cancer. No other details have been given. Mrs Sapp was a professional councelor and administrative pastor at her husband's Lighthouse Full Life Center Church in Grand Rapids MI. The church had posted a message on it's web site asking for prayers for Malinda Sapp. The couple had three children. Marvin Sapp is one of gospel music's most popular stars, having set a record with his 2008 single "Never Would Have Made It" for it's duration on the charts. He recently had a number one single on the Billboard charts with his latest "The Best In Me". Prayers and condolences to the entire Sapp family. May God bless them all. The George Clooney film "The American" was crowned box office king over the holiday weekend, earning over $12 million dollars. "Takers", "Machete", "The Last Excorcism" and "Going The Distance" round out the top five films of the week. Rapper Lil Wayne has confirmed that his next album "The Carter 4" will be released on November 4. The rapper will be released from prison on the same day. Rapper Kanye West recently took to social networking site Twitter to offer country singing sensation Taylor Swift an apology for his behavior at the MTV Video Music Awards a few years ago. The rapper is slated to perform on this year's show, although there's been no word on whether he and the tween queen will do a duet together. Rapper DMX has recently indicated that he's not a fan of rapper Plies. Let's hope the beef does not continue on for a long period of time. Matthew Knowles, father of singer Beyonce Knowles, recently dispelled rumors that his daughter has fired him as her manager. He released a statement saying "We have a close business and personal relationship". Newlyweds T.I. and Tiny were arrested in Los Angeles last night on drug charges. T.I., whose given name is Clifford Harris and Tiny, whose given name is Tameka Cottle, were both booked at Hollywood's sheriff's station, where bail was posted at $10,000. The couple was pulled over on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood by authorities for a routine traffic stop. Police claim they smelled marijuana in coming from the Maybach they were driving. Unfortunely, this recent arrest could be a problem for T.I, who was recently released from jail on gun charges and is currently on probation. Stay tuned for more as this story develops. Rapper Young Buck has filed for bankruptcy. Filing chaper 13 will allow the rapper to repay creditors back under a court approved five year plan. He will also be able to reclaim items the IRS seized during a raid at his home. Fans will recall the government agency raided the home and took several items. In other Young Buck news, the rapper is slated to release a new album titled, "The Rehab" on September 7. One rumored replacement for actor Steve Carell when he leaves the hit show "The Office" is actor Harvey Keitel. The show's executive producer has stated that he thinks Keitel would be a perfect choice, although he hasn't spokent to Keitel's people about the possiblity. Check back here for more as it develops. As if he hasn't burned up the Billboard charts and radio airwaves enough, rapper Drake says he's completing his sophmore album along with a mixtape to be released before the end of the year. Singer Rihanna is set to release a new single as well. No word on a title or release date. The BET documentary on female rappers "My Mic Sounds Nice" has sparked a lively conversation regarding women in hip hop. Female artists, male artists and music executives alike have weighed in on the subject with interesting view points. Let's hope female artist become more promient in the industry in the future. Country music fans may want to catch "CMA Music Festival: Country's Night To Rock" tonight at 8p.m. on CBS. It's a salute to the four day event in which several country stars will take part. Fox's "Top Chef" has been keeping viewers tuned in with one mouth watering surprise after another. Be sure to tune in to see who walks away with the grand prize. Sunday night's Emmy Award broadcast remained steady in it's ratings, it tied last years ratings, but came out a head of the 2008 show. Jennifer Esposito is set to join the cast of the upcoming new fall series "Blue Bloods". CBS has confirmed that Esposito will guest star on several episodes of the show, which is about a family with deep roots in law enforcement. The show is set to premiere September 24 at 10 p.m. With the buzz in Hollywood created by the upcoming George Clooney film "The American", only time will tell if Mr Clooney will add another Oscar to his collection.
